STRONG VICTORY TO KICK START HEADS 2019 SEASON

A new look Barwon Heads side with 4 first gamers amongst the 9 changes to the 22 who represented the club in the 2018 Grand Final side, were victorious over reigning premiers Modewarre. Modewarre unfurled their premiership flag and the game begun in a highly contested and physical manner. Both sides went for each other and Matty “Dogga” Dyer kicked the opening two goals to get Heads off to a flyer in the first 5 minutes. The pressure of the contest created numerous skill levels and Modewarre wrestled control in the second half of the quarter and looked the better side.

New non playing coach Troy “Baked Bean Head” Mitchell certainly let his team know where we were getting exposed, in regards to bombing the footy and also not sticking tackles. The response in the second quarter was swift with big Tyson providing a great contest, and midfielders Damage, Ryan Harvs, Otto, Braedo, Rock and Stevo were all busy. Herbie and Strawbs were a constant threat up forward and combined to kick 3 goals between them. Unfortunately we missed a number of set shots, and Modewarre were more efficient up forward and converted their opportunities, kicking 2 late goals to reduce our lead to 5 points at the major break.

The third quarter saw Barwon Heads start to gain greater control – the defence led by Dizzy, Evo, Philpy and Wayno stood tall, and the connection to our forwards started to generate better results. Tim McIntyre started to have a big presence, with small forwards BJ and Phelpsy also started to find more space and look dangerous. J Mac produced an inspirational passage of play which resulted in a team lifting goal for the Heads. A five goal quarter saw the Heads establish a 23 point lead at the final break.

The final quarter saw the Heads continue on their winning way by kicking 4 goals to 1. The defence was rock solid with Kizza, Zac and Brad Harvey providing plenty of rebound. Marto kicked a goal after a strong contested mark and Dogga kicked his third after a great snap. In the end Barwon Heads recorded a convincing 45 point victory.
