Dashing down the Wing

Why I play with the Seagals

By Sophie Dinneen

My name is Sophie Dineen and I have been part of the Barwon Heads Football & Netball Club for almost three years now.

Growing up I have always loved football, I played AusKick as an eager 7-year-old and later went on to play under 12s and under 14s with the boys down at Drysdale Football club.

After finishing my time with the boys, I was looking for a girls team, but unfortunately there weren’t many options locally. That was until I heard that Barwon Heads had announced their search for female recruits to start up a Youth Girls team and I of course jumped at the chance.

Getting the team together was initially a challenge,  we needed to have the numbers we to field a team.  Although new to the club, I did my part to gather as many girls as I could to ensure we had a played that season – and we did.

Playing football with the girls down at Barwon Heads brings great joy and has given me the opportunity to one day, hopefully, play AFLW.

Words can’t really describe my gratitude for all those involved in providing myself and many others with the chance to play women’s football.

Here’s to the great season ahead!
