HEADS LOSE IN CLOSE FINISH TO MODDA

Barwon Heads have failed to overcome a resilient Modewarre side by 5 points in Round 8 action last Saturday. In brilliant sunny conditions played in front of another strong home crowd, both sides entered the game boasting a 5 win 2 loss record.

Barwon Heads made 5 changes to the Round 7 side that defeated Portarlington – Nathan Brown, Otto Opperman, Brad Harvey, Sam Evans and Archie Hildebrandt came into the side for David Stretton, Dom Booth, James Wills, Charlie Nairn and Will Paulin.

Barwon Heads and Modewarre traded 5 goals apiece in a free flowing opening quarter as the Heads led by two points at the first break. In the second quarter Modewarre started to dominate centre clearances and they were able to penetrate our defence and they were rewarded with a 5 goal quarter to open up a decisive half time lead.

In the second half Barwon Heads mounted a spirited comeback and although losing both Mitch Phelps and Brad Harvey to injury early in the third, the home side was able to reduce the three quarter lead to 7 points.

The final quarter was a tug of war as both sides gave their all but Modewarre was able to capitalise on every mistake made by the Heads to kick some clutch goals and their accuracy in front of the big sticks was decisive. Modewarre deserved their victory and are now a game clear in the top 3 with Barwon Heads back in fourth position.
